Too many coats are purchased for the color and how it looks on the model, then end up pilled and shiny at the elbows by their third winter. A coat is a higher-ticket purchase and having to replace a sub-par one is frustrating. To choose the best wool coats for women in this guide, the ones that will actually last, we looked deeper at the cloth, lining, length, and where the coat was made. Those facts determine whether a coat worn almost daily in winter will still look good in its tenth or fifteenth year.
This guide names eighteen coats in black, brown, burgundy, gray, camel and navy, in three closure styles a professional wardrobe uses: single-breasted, double-breasted, and wrap. Eight of them are 100% wool coats. The rest are wool blended with cashmere or alpaca. None have nylon or polyester in the shell, for the reason given in the questions at the end. We aimed to find coats that would hit at the lower knee to calf on a woman 5’3″ to 5’4″, and the three longer coats are marked as picks for tall women.
Each coat is judged against the four questions behind The Standard: Will the design survive trends over the next five years? Is it well made? Does it provide the fit, warmth and style a workday requires? Will it have a reasonable cost per wear? Brands rarely publish how a coat is built inside, so we judged quality on what they do publish: the fiber content of the cloth and what it is lined with. We also required the country to be published by the brand or a stockist because it is part of what you are paying for, and some of us weigh it. That rule treats every country the same. Several coats here are made in China, and their cloth passed the same test as every other pick.
All of these coats are likely to last 10 to 15 years. Cost per wear assumes 70 wears a year, for fifteen years when the shell is 90% wool or more and ten years when it is 70 to 89% wool. Alpaca counts as wool here because it wears as well as wool. The cost to have it relined was added where the lining will wear out before the shell, assuming the new lining is cupro, which should last the rest of the coat’s life. Some brands passed in several colors, which is why a few names appear more than once. No brand paid to appear here. Where Credence earns a commission on a link, the pick was made first and the link was added after.

BEST BLACK SINGLE-BREASTED COAT
Cinzia Rocca Maxi Black Wool Coat with Masculine Cut
100% wool, made in Italy and fully lined in viscose, a lining that breathes and slides easily over a blazer sleeve. A two-button single-breasted front with notch lapels, flap pockets, set-in sleeves, and a back vent. It is cut like the single-breasted overcoat that men and women have worn over tailoring for generations. The length is 118 cm (46.5 inches). On the 5’10” model it ends at mid-calf, so expect the lower calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Dry clean only.
Fit: Runs large. Cinzia Rocca recommends one size down, but also calls the cut regular and fitted, so try the smaller size on over a blazer you plan to wear under it.
Best for: Someone who wants one black coat to wear over suits and dresses for the next fifteen years.

BEST BLACK DOUBLE-BREASTED COAT
‘S Max Mara Double-Breasted Virgin Wool Coat
100% virgin wool, meaning wool spun for the first time. Its fibers are longer than recycled wool’s, which makes the cloth more durable. A long double-breasted front with six buttons, side slit pockets, and straps at the cuffs. The belt is optional. On a 5’10” model it ends just below the knee, so expect it to come to the top of the calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Made in China. Dry clean.
Fit: True to size, straight fit.
Best for: Someone who wants the double-breasted coat in its most classic form, worn over tailoring and buttoned to the neck on cold days.

BEST BLACK WRAP COAT
Sentaler Baby Alpaca Long Wide Collar Wrap Coat
70% baby alpaca with 30% wool. Baby alpaca is one of the finest grades of alpaca fiber, and the fiber is partly hollow, so the coat is warm for its weight. This has more structured shoulders than a typical wrap coat to keep a tailored look. A wide collar held by a corozo button at the chest, a self-tie belt, oversized square pockets, and Sentaler’s signature ribbed cuffs. The hem sits at the lower calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Lined in 90% polyester and 10% spandex. Made in Peru. Dry clean only, and do not steam.
Fit: Cut for light to moderate layering. The tie waist makes it forgiving across sizes.
Best for: Someone who wants a black wrap coat that is warm without weight, tied over knitwear or a dress. The wide collar is the statement and it turns up against the wind. Not for heavy layering, Sentaler cuts it for a sweater or a light jacket underneath.

BEST BROWN SINGLE-BREASTED COAT
Walker Slater Ethel Harris Tweed Coat
Harris Tweed, a pure wool cloth that by law is handwoven in only the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. With no nylon in the cloth, the pills that rubbing raises break off instead of collecting. Dark chocolate brown with tan and red fibers running through a plain weave, so it looks like a solid brown from across a room and tweed up close. Three buttons, notched lapels, slanted flap pockets, and a single back vent in a loose cut with a little shaping at the waist. Walker Slater says the hem sits just below the knee on someone 5’7″. Lined in viscose. The brand’s tailoring is done in Europe and names Portugal among its manufacturers. Dry clean only. US buyers pay import charges on delivery: Walker Slater says to expect about 35% of the order value, and those charges are not refunded if the coat is returned. This was still the best pick for the price with duties included. The cost per wear includes them.
Fit: True to size, a standard loose fit. Sizes are UK, so a US 4 is a UK 8. Returns are accepted within 30 days, unworn with tags, but you pay the shipping back to Scotland so check the size guide against a coat you own before ordering.
Best for: Someone who wants a classic brown coat with texture to wear over tailoring and knitwear for years. Not for anyone who wants a smooth, flat cloth. For that, the Loulou de Saison Irvin below comes in the same dark brown.

BEST BROWN DOUBLE-BREASTED COAT
Loulou de Saison Irvin Long Wool Cashmere Drap Coat
90% wool with 10% cashmere in a drap, a densely woven, lightly brushed wool cloth that hangs straight and keeps a clean shape. The brown melange color is a very dark espresso with a faint heather. The straight cut is taken from a man’s overcoat, with a double-breasted front, raglan sleeves, and notch lapels that make it a softer take on a traditional style. This coat is unlined, so be aware that it slides less easily over a jacket sleeve than a lined coat. Loulou de Saison does not list a country. Milan Fashionista says China. On the brand’s 5’9″ model it falls to the lower calf, so it reaches the ankle on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″.
Fit: Runs oversized. Size down one for a closer, more classic fit.
Best for: Tall women who want a long, easy menswear coat to wear over tailoring. On a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″ it reaches the ankle. The relaxed cut is part of the look, but the shoulder seam should still sit close to your own. If it hangs well past it, size down.

BEST BROWN WRAP COAT
Sentaler Baby Alpaca Long Funnel Collar Wrap Coat
The same 70% baby alpaca and 30% wool cloth as the black and camel wrap picks, light and warm for its weight. A funnel collar that stands up around the neck, so it keeps out the wind without a scarf, a single engraved corozo button at the front, a self-tie belt, welt pockets, and Sentaler’s ribbed cuffs. Sentaler publishes 47 inches down the back on an XS, so the hem sits at the bottom of the calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″, the longest of the four Sentaler wraps here. Lined in 100% cupro, a durable lining that should last the life of the coat. Made in Peru. Dry clean only, and do not steam.
Fit: True to size, and Sentaler suggests sizing up if you are between sizes. Cut for light to moderate layering, and the tie waist makes it forgiving across sizes.
Best for: Someone who wants a brown wrap coat that keeps the neck warm without a scarf. Women under 5’3″ should check the length, since at 47 inches it will be long.

BEST BURGUNDY SINGLE-BREASTED COAT
Joseph Donna Double Face Cashmere Coat
80% wool with 20% cashmere in a mid-weight double-faced cloth. The cashmere makes it softer and the lower wool content means it is estimated at about ten years of wear, not fifteen. Mahogany, a dark red-brown that appears burgundy. A long, rounded single-breasted shape with raglan sleeves, a concealed button placket, welt side pockets, and a half-moon collar that fastens up to the neck. Joseph calls the silhouette an oversized cocoon. Joseph lists neither a lining nor a country, but Mytheresa states a polyester and viscose lining, made in China. On the 5’10” model it falls to the lower calf, so it reaches the ankle on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Dry clean.
Fit: True to size. The raglan sleeves leave room for a jacket underneath.
Best for: Taller women who want one coat in a color that still works as a neutral over black, navy and gray. Fastened high, the collar replaces a scarf.

BEST BURGUNDY DOUBLE-BREASTED COAT
Sofia Cashmere Double Breasted Wool-Cashmere Coat
95% wool with 5% cashmere, enough cashmere to make it feel very soft while the wool handles the wear. A deep, wine red shade of burgundy. Peak lapels, a one-button double-breasted front, flap pockets with slip pockets beside them, set-in sleeves, and a back vent. It has a straight, close cut that sits at the shoulder. Saks gives the length as about 40 inches from shoulder to hem, which is just below the knee on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. However, the photos look a little longer, so it’s best to try it on. Made in the USA. Dry clean. The acetate lining will wear before the wool, so plan on one reline, about $250. That cost is included in the cost per wear.
Fit: Not published. Saks’s model is 5’10” and wears a US 4.
Best for: Someone who wants a burgundy coat with the shape of a classic overcoat, buttoned over a suit or a dress. Not for anyone who needs to try a coat at home and send it back, since it is final sale.

BEST BURGUNDY WRAP COAT
‘S Max Mara Poldo Wool Wrap Coat
100% wool. Bordeaux, a dark wine red that sits close to brown and goes over black, navy and gray. Notched lapels, set-in sleeves, side slit pockets, and a matching belt that is the only fastening. Mytheresa lists a silk lining. No length is published. On the 5’9″ model it ends at mid-calf, so expect the lower calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Made in China. Dry clean. The silk lining will wear before the wool, so plan on one reline, about $250. That cost is included in the cost per wear.
Fit: True to size, straight fit, adjustable at the waist.
Best for: Someone who wants a burgundy coat to tie over knitwear or a dress and wear open over tailoring. Women under 5’3″ should check the length before buying, since no length is published and the photos put the hem low on the calf.

BEST GRAY SINGLE-BREASTED COAT
Cinzia Rocca Maxi Grey Wool Coat with Masculine Cut
The same coat as the black single-breasted pick, in gray: 100% wool, fully lined in viscose, made in Italy. A two-button front, notch lapels, flap pockets, set-in sleeves, and a back vent. 118 cm long, to the lower calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Gray shows lint and dust less than black and sits as well over brown tailoring as over black and navy. Dry clean only.
Fit: Runs large. Cinzia Rocca recommends one size down. Regular, fitted cut, so try it over a blazer if that’s how you will wear it.
Best for: Someone who wears black, navy and brown and wants one coat that goes over all three. Women under 5’3″ should check the length before buying.

BEST GRAY DOUBLE-BREASTED COAT
Róhe Scarf-Detail Wool and Cashmere Coat
95% wool with 5% cashmere, enough cashmere to make it very soft while the wool keeps it durable. Mid Grey Melange, a heathered mid gray. Double-breasted with a shawl lapel, welt pockets, a single back vent, and a double-layered scarf attached at the neckline that drapes like a separate scarf but stays in place. On a 5’10” model it ends at mid-calf, so expect the lower calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Made in Italy. Dry clean.
Fit: True to size, designed for a loose fit (Mytheresa).
Best for: Someone who wants the scarf built in, so the coat looks finished over a suit with nothing else to arrange. The loose cut should still sit at your own shoulder. If the seam hangs past it, size down.

BEST GRAY WRAP COAT
‘S Max Mara Virgin Wool Wrap Coat
100% virgin wool. Light Gray, a pale gray that lightens a dark wardrobe. Notched lapels, a detachable matching belt, and a straight cut. On a 5’10” model it ends at the knee, so expect the top of the calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. No lining listed. Made in China. Dry clean. A pale coat shows dirt at the cuffs and the front edge first. Plan on cleaning it once a season.
Fit: True to size, straight fit.
Best for: Someone with a black, navy or charcoal wardrobe who wants a light coat to wear over it. Not for anyone who wants a coat that needs little extra care. Light gray needs more cleaning than the dark coats here.

BEST CAMEL SINGLE-BREASTED COAT
The Checkroom Southport Wool Coat
100% Shaniko wool, grown on regenerative American farms, RWS and NATIVA Regen certified, woven at American Woolen in Connecticut and cut and sewn in Chicago. Classic camel color. A knee-length single-breasted coat with a deep collar, deep side pockets, adjustable cuffs, and a single column of magnetic horn snaps in place of buttons. Fully lined in The Checkroom’s striped rayon and polyester lining. The brand rates it for 5 to 35°F and says its XXS suits women from 5’1″ to 5’4″. Made to order, so allow about four weeks. Dry clean only.
Fit: True to size with room for light to moderate layering. A slight A-line gives room through the hips. The Checkroom suggests sizing up if you wear thick sweaters or blazers underneath.
Best for: Someone in a cold climate who wants an American-made camel coat to wear over trousers and knee-length skirts. Not for midi skirts since it is cut to the knee.

BEST CAMEL DOUBLE-BREASTED COAT
Loulou de Saison Rosco LDS Double Breasted Long Coat
Made from Loro Piana wool and cashmere drap, 90% virgin wool and 10% cashmere. Drap is densely woven and lightly brushed, which gives the coat its weight and a clean line. Cut and detailed as a man’s overcoat: double-breasted, with peak lapels, side seam pockets, a back vent, and padded shoulders. Loulou de Saison lists neither a lining nor a country. Reversible’s listing for the black Rosco gives a viscose lining and Romania. On the brand’s 5’11” model it falls to the lower calf, so it reaches the ankle on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″.
Fit: True to size.
Best for: Tall women who want the classic camel overcoat with peak lapels. Check the shoulders in the mirror before keeping it: they are padded, and they should end at your own shoulder line. Shoulders that extend well past it are the part of an overcoat that will most likely look dated once the oversized trend fades. On a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″ it reaches the ankle.

BEST CAMEL WRAP COAT
Sentaler Baby Alpaca Long Notched Collar Wrap Coat
The same 70% baby alpaca and 30% wool cloth as the black wrap pick, light and warm for its weight. Dark Camel, a deeper camel that hides wear at the cuffs and front edge better than a pale one. A notched collar taken from a man’s coat, flap welt pockets, a self-tie belt, no buttons, and Sentaler’s ribbed cuffs. Sentaler publishes 46 inches down the back on an XS, so the hem sits at the lower calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Lined in 90% polyester and 10% spandex. Made in Peru. Dry clean only, and do not steam.
Fit: Cut for light to moderate layering. The tie waist makes it forgiving across sizes.
Best for: Someone who wants the camel coat in its softest form, tied over knitwear on weekends and over a dress for work. Women under 5’3″ should check the length. At 46 inches it runs long.

BEST NAVY SINGLE-BREASTED COAT
Cinzia Rocca Blue Wool and Cashmere Coat with High Stand Up Collar
90% virgin wool with 10% cashmere, fully lined in viscose, made in Italy. A dark navy blue color. It has a high standing collar with a small button at the neck, three hidden buttons down the front, on-seam side pockets, and set-in sleeves. It has a gently flared line and is from the brand’s permanent collection. At 105 cm it falls just below the knee on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Dry clean only.
Fit: Regular fit with a gentle flare.
Best for: Someone who wants a navy coat with no lapels to manage: the collar closes to the neck and does the work of a scarf. The hidden buttons keep the front plain. Not for anyone who wants a shirt collar or scarf to show at the neck.

BEST NAVY DOUBLE-BREASTED COAT
Weekend Max Mara Resina Double-Breasted Wool Coat
Pure wool drap, 100% virgin wool, densely woven and brushed. Navy blue. A long double-breasted coat with a wide lapel, long kimono sleeves, welt side pockets, a matching belt, and a central back slit. Max Mara describes a wide fit and a straight wrap silhouette. The belt lets it close as a wrap too. Nordstrom gives 44.5 inches on a size 2, which puts the hem at mid-calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. The lining is listed as 50% acetate, 50% viscose. Made in Italy. Dry clean. The acetate lining will wear before the wool, so plan on one reline, about $250, and you could wear this for 15 years . That cost is included in the cost per wear.
Fit: Wide fit (Max Mara), true to size (Nordstrom). The kimono sleeves leave room for a jacket underneath.
Best for: Someone who wants a navy coat that goes over a suit jacket with room to spare. Kimono sleeves create a softer shoulder line. For a crisp, tailored shoulder, the Cinzia Rocca stand collar coat above is the navy to choose.

BEST NAVY WRAP COAT
Sentaler Suri Alpaca Long Shawl Collar Wrap Coat
70% suri alpaca with 30% wool, finished as zibeline, a cloth with a long, lustrous nap brushed in one direction. Suri is the rarer of the two alpaca breeds, with long, silky locks, which is where the coat’s sheen comes from. Deep, lustrous Navy. A shawl collar, a self-tie belt, a vented back hem, and Sentaler’s ribbed cuffs. Sentaler publishes 44 inches down the back on an XS, so the hem sits at mid-calf on a woman of 5’3″ to 5’4″. Common Questions
How long should a winter coat be for work?
Long enough to cover what you wear under it. A knee-length coat works over trousers and skirts that end at the knee. A midi skirt or dress needs a coat that reaches the calf, or the hem shows below it. Brands usually publish length as a center-back measurement, from the neck seam to the hem. To see where a coat will land on you, have someone measure down your back from the bone at the base of your neck to where you want the hem, and compare that with the brand’s figure. We recommend a calf-length coat over an ankle length so it gets caught in car doors and drags on the floor less often.
Does a wool coat need a lining?
A full lining helps a coat slide over a jacket, protects the wool from friction and adds warmth. Double-faced wool is the exception: it is woven with two finished faces, so it is often unlined or lined only across the top. What the lining is made of matters as much as whether there is one. Viscose, cupro, and polyester linings should last the life of the coat. Silk and acetate linings won’t last as long as the shell, so a good wool coat lined in either will need one reline, about $250 at a tailor, before the shell wears out. Ask for cupro when you reline. It lasts much longer than silk or acetate.
How much wool should a good coat have?
All of it, or close to it. Every coat here is wool, or wool blended with cashmere or alpaca. Nylon and polyester make a cloth harder to tear, but they also make it look worn sooner. Rubbing works loose fibers out of any wool and rolls them into small balls. On pure wool those balls are held on by weak wool fibers, so they break off and shed. In a blend, the strong synthetic fibers hold them in place more (Elshakankery, 2008), so pills build up at the cuffs, sides and front within the first few winters. That worn look is usually what retires a work coat, so blends are left out of this guide. A trace of nylon, a few percent added for stability, is too little to hold pills. A coat that is 90% wool or more (alpaca counts as wool) is counted at about fifteen years of wear here, and one that is 70 to 89% wool at about ten.
Is a cashmere coat a better buy than a wool coat?
For women who wear a coat most days, usually not. Cashmere is softer and lighter for its warmth, but its fibers are short and fine, so the cloth pills and wears thin at the cuffs and front edge sooner than wool. That is why cashmere does not count toward the wool content that sets a coat’s lifespan in this guide. The coats here that include cashmere use 5 to 20% of it, enough to make it feel soft while the wool takes the wear. Those with 10% or less are still 90% wool or more and estimated to last about fifteen years. The Joseph Donna, at 20% cashmere, is counted at about ten. A 100% cashmere coat makes more sense as a second coat than as the one you wear every day.
Single-breasted, double-breasted or wrap: which should I buy first?
Single-breasted if you wear tailoring most days. It lies flattest over a jacket, looks right worn open, and is the shape that changes least. A double-breasted coat is warmer, since the front overlaps across the chest, and a little more formal. A wrap coat is the most forgiving over bulky knitwear and adjusts with the belt, so it is the one to choose if you rarely wear a jacket. For a more tailored-looking wrap coat, choose one of the Sentaler coats above.
Why are four of the six wrap coats from Sentaler?
Sentaler’s wrap coats passed all four requirements in black, brown, camel and navy. They are made in Peru from 70% alpaca and 30% wool, a cloth that is warm for its weight, and they come to about $2.20 to $2.50 a wear. Sentaler also publishes the length down the back of each coat, so you can see where the hem will fall before you order. The four are different coats with different collars: a wide collar on the black, a funnel collar on the brown, a notched collar on the camel, and a shawl collar on the navy. If you prefer one collar in another color, check Sentaler’s site. The funnel collar coat, for example, also comes in black, ivory, glacial blue, and scarlet red. Sentaler did not pay to appear here. The coats are just that good.
How do I care for a wool coat?
Brush it with a clothes brush after wearing to lift dust before it settles into the weave, and let it rest a day between wears on a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their shape. Dry clean once a season at most, following the label, since cleaning strips the natural oils from wool. Store it in a breathable garment bag with cedar against moths, never in plastic.
